The Gambia, located in Western Africa, is officially known as the Republic of the Gambia and it is a member of the Commonwealth. More than 50% of the population is dependent on crops and livestock for its source of income. Agriculture dominates the economy of the country. Chief crops include peanuts, millet, sorghum, rice, corn, cassava (tapioca) and palm kernels. Livestock are raised including cattle, sheep and goats. Groundnut is the chief export product and it is also a significant foreign currency earner. Main industries of the Gambia include processing peanuts, fish, hides, tourism, beverages, agricultural machinery assembly, woodworking, metalworking and clothing. |
